Why Nations Fail

by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson

Acemoglu and Robinson argue that countries get rich or stay poor mostly because of their institutions, not their geography or culture. Inclusive ones spread power and protect property, while extractive ones let a small elite drain everyone else. The single explanation gets stretched a little thin across all of history, but it is a powerful lens, and hard to unsee once you have it.
